Emotion regulation or self regulation is a term generally used to describe a person’s ability to effectively manage and respond to an emotional experience. Depending on a person’s age, their ability to regulate may be underdeveloped, stuck or impaired. Children, teens and adults require different approaches and techniques to support increased awareness of emotions, tolerance to stress and skills to develop a greater capacity for self regulation, and co-regulation strategies. Our arts therapists are skilled in using the arts combined with mindfulness to down-regulate big emotions, build capacity and promote greater resilience to the effects of overwhelm, stress and big emotional states.
